CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
What is it?
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a UK Government initiative designed to reduce
the emissions from UK companies who are currently excluded from the EU emissions
trading scheme.
Qualifying organisations will have to purchase allowances in April 2011 to cover
their emissions, set initially at £12/tonne CO2 with all payments recycled by October
2011 to participating organisations according to their place in a performance league
table.
Companies at the bottom of the emission reduction league table will be charged 10%
of the allowances they have purchased rising to 50% in year 5 of the scheme with
the charges recycled to top performing companies.
What will companies have to do?
In order to be compliant with the scheme there are a number of steps companies will
have to take:
1. Collect and verify energy usage figures
2. Submit registration information
3. Monitor energy usage from April 2010
4. Purchase appropriate allowances in April 2011
5. Submit evidence pack to verify emissions
There are significant penalties for non compliance with £5,000 + £500
per day for failing to register and £40 per tonne for emissions incorrectly
reported.
